Tastes of the Sea in the Heart of Myrtle Beach

Spotlighting the menu at Hook & Barrel in central Myrtle Beach

The commitment local seafood restaurant Hook & Barrel makes to provide distinctive, sustainable seafood dishes and local produce is unmatched for any other restaurant in the category, and that commitment can be seen in each and every dish they prepare. Located in the heart of Myrtle Beach — appropriately just blocks from the Atlantic Ocean — Hook & Barrel is a must-try on your upcoming MBGolf.com vacation. Here’s what to check out for yourself from the menu:

A dish known for its magnitude throughout the Grand Strand, Hook & Barrel’s seafood tower appetizer (market price) includes oysters in shell, crab legs, shrimp cocktail, ceviche and lobster tail – again, with a strong emphasis on serving sustainably sourced catch from local waters whenever possible. In addition, be sure and order a couple bloody mary oyster shooters for the table before the main course arrives.

There are so many great entrees to try at Hook & Barrel. The pineapple shrimp fried rice is a bigtime favorite, and so too is the Lowcountry Jambalaya for 2, with clams, shrimp, fresh catch, scallops, crab, chicken, andouille sausage, bell peppers, jalapeno, onions, tomato and vegetable broth, served over rice with a French baguette. The flavors cannot be beat!

Also, inquire about the Harvest of the Sea special, with that day’s fresh fish selection (market price), prepared one of four ways and served with one of five sauces, along with a choice of side. In addition, top it with crab cake or imperial topping for $6.

Finally, at dessert time, their baked Alaska is no joke.

Hook & Barrel is open daily at 4 p.m. except for their Sunday Brunch (9 a.m.), which is a top-notch dining experience as well. Meanwhile, their Happy Hour runs 4-6 p.m., Monday-Saturday. Whenever you choose to stop in, make Hook & Barrel part of your plans on your next golf trip with MBGolf.com. You won’t regret it!

Same Great Quigley’s, Brand-New Location

Experience Quigley’s Pint & Plate’s recently opened second spot in Murrells Inlet this spring

Sharing great food and cold beer among family and friends is what mealtime on your upcoming MBGolf.com vacation is all about. So, if you’re looking for a one-stop shop that provides the highest-quality grub and brews, all in a fun, pub-style setting, consider trying Quigley’s Pint & Plate’s new second location in Murrells Inlet when you visit the Grand Strand this spring.

Quigley’s Pint & Plate features Lowcountry-inspired comfort fare with house-made ales and lagers in an English pub atmosphere. Their lunch menu includes elevated favorites like ahi tuna nachos: sesame seared rare tuna on crispy flour tortilla chips with seaweed salad, cucumber-wasabi cream and sriracha sauce. There also is their grilled portobello caprese sandwich, involving pesto grilled portobello mushroom with fresh mozzarella, basil, sliced tomatoes and balsamic glaze on a brioche roll.

At dinnertime, be sure to order the ale-poached clams as an appetizer. These little necks are poached in wheat beer, with tomato, garlic and fresh herbs, then served with grilled bread. For an entrée, you can’t go wrong with the Cajun ribeye with fried oysters. This dish is topped with spicy tomato-bacon cream sauce and served with mashed potatoes and green beans. What a true Southern delight!

Of course, don’t forget what Quigley’s is really known for: the beer! Eight beers always are on tap, including specialty brewed seasonal selections from their in-house brewery. Current offerings include a white ale, a peach wheat and an Irish stout. They also offer half-gallon growlers and 32 oz. growlers available to go, so if you find a beer you really like, take some with you and enjoy it at your leisure the rest of your stay. Additionally, Quigley’s has a wide selection of wines, cocktails, martinis and hand-crafted draft cocktails available.

Taste the quality for yourself this spring at Quigley’s in Murrells Inlet. Though this location is brand-spanking-new, they already are making quite the impression on those who visit. As one person put it on TripAdvisor:

“As the Pawleys location is one of our favorites, could not wait for this to open so we could try it. Went with a friend … and it was just as excellent. Service is friendly, prices reasonable.”

A Hole to Behold

No. 17 at Glen Dornoch: Impossible to find a hole more scenic than this

The finishing three holes at Glen Dornoch are among Myrtle Beach’s toughest, offering stunning views of the Intracoastal Waterway – but with it, wind, wetlands and water, requiring players to be at their very best. The middle of this iconic stretch, No. 17 is considered by many to be the most scenic par 3 in the area. But don’t admire the view too long! The hole is no slouch and has punished more than its fair share of scorecards. Here’s what you’ll see, and need to do, when you play No.17 on your MBGolf.com vacation.

From the tees, the Intracoastal Waterway lies gracefully in the background behind No. 17’s hourglass-shaped green. But that’s not even close to it all. What makes this hole so disastrously captivating, so wonderfully terrifying, is that it’s long (measuring 212 yards from the black tees and 164 from the white) and the green is entirely protected in the front and left by coastal marsh. You might think, “I’ll just bail out right and long then.” But you can’t do that, either, because course designer Clyde Johnston protects the right side of the green with several strategic pot bunkers, a large greenside bunker dug out with railroad ties and a dense forest of Carolina pines. What does that all add up to? A shot that you can’t mishit without the chance of throwing up a big number on the card.

With no place to bail out, the only option is to choose your club wisely, commit to the shot and hit before the beautiful madness gets in your head. Often, the pin placement will tease players to hit shots close to the water. Our suggestion? Don’t succumb to the pressure. A strong middle iron to the center of the green will do just fine, all while still giving you a chance to make a 2 and move on to No. 18.

You’ll step on to the tee box and feel it: The beauty and difficulty of this remarkable par 3.

Hole Spotlight: No. 11 at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

The Myrtle Beach golf scene offers plenty of memorable golf holes, including several along the South Strand and at one award-winning design in particular: Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, [caledonia] which among its many accolades has been cited by Golf Magazine as one of “America’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play.”

While the finishing hole here gets its fair share of attention for its challenge, beauty and famous clubhouse back porch audience cheering on your approach, we highlight here one of the more picturesque holes at Caledonia – the par-3 11th Hole, where former PGA TOUR pro Hugh Royer III takes you on a playing tour to show you how best to play it.

Standing here on the 11th Hole at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, this is a hole that gives you a look that you just puts you in awe!

From these tees, you’ve got 147 yards to a front pin. If the pin were in the back left, you could be talking another 30 yards of length on this hole – a three-club difference depending on pin placement, easily. You can see there’s a creek that runs through here with the tall, natural grass … it’s just a gorgeous setting and a great golf hole.

So at 147 yards, I’m going to take an 8 iron, catch it just to the right of the flag (there’s a nice little ramp or backstop in there), and see if we can’t put something in there nice and close.

(My shot here was) not too bad, just right of the flag, caught the slope and came down nicely. Leaves us about 15 feet for a shot at birdie, and at least get ourselves a par and move on to the next hole!

Our Beach’s Best Package and Grand Slam Package are just two of many ways MBGolf.com can help you experience the splendor of Caledonia Golf & Fish Club for yourself. Visit our packages page to see these options and more, or give us a call at 800-422-1587 and we’ll be ready to help you get your spring golf plans in motion! [1419]  [river-club]

Shark Wake Park: Fun for the Entire Family!

Shark Wake Park

Water sports lovers have a new playground, and it’s right here in Myrtle Beach.

Shark Wake Park, located in the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex, was founded by Greg Norman Jr. and officially opened to the public only two years ago.

Shark Wake’s most unique feature is that a boat is not required to wakeboard. The park functions using cable systems and nine ramps to ride on as part of the main track.

But if you’re like many of us who have never stepped on a wakeboard, don’t be intimidated. Shark Wake offers beginner levels on the wake course itself as well as one-on-one lessons to make sure you feel confident when you step on the board for the first time. The park caters to professional wakeboarders as well with more experienced tracks including the highest jump at the park, appropriately named “The Big Kicker.”

With no experience and no equipment required, Shark Wake is one of the most versatile entertainment complexes on the Grand Strand.

If you’re not into wakeboarding, Shark Wake also features an Aqua Park. This inflatable, floating park is the largest on the East Coast, covering roughly an entire acre of water. Whether you’re 10 years old or a parent, you are sure to have a blast here.

In addition to the water activities, Shark Wake Park also features a waterfront viewing deck, beer garden, and the Shark Shack where you can take a load off after a day on the water with beer, wine, other beverages, and snacks.

Shark Wake Park is also conveniently located near dozens of award-winning golf courses, making it the perfect post-round activity for the entire family. Check out our wide range of nearby golf accommodations that will make it easy to include a visit to Shark Wake as part of your next golf trip!

Our Top 5 Myrtle Beach Seafood Restaurants

Aside from golf, at top of the priority list for most our groups is where to find the best seafood in Myrtle Beach.

With fresh locally caught fish going straight from the boat to your plate, finding a place that serves outstanding seafood is relatively easy, ranking the best the area has to offer is far more difficult.

But, we are here for you. Here is a look at the places we recommend golfers enjoy an outstanding seafood dinner with two caveats: this list only takes into account restaurants in Myrtle and North Myrtle AND it has to be a seafood-centric restaurant (so places like Aspen Grille, which is outstanding, won’t be included).

Without further ado, here are our top 5 seafood restaurants:

5. Located across from Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach, Rockefellers Raw Bar is an area institution. A nondescript building can’t obscure the food, particularly the shellfish. Oysters, clams, shrimp, scallops and mussels are the specialties at a restaurant us locals (and TripAdvisor readers) swear by.

4. Mr. Fish doubles as a restaurant and fish market, serving fresh seafood anyway you want it. The in-house dining is very good, but Mr. Fish gets bonus points for the market, allowing golf groups to prepare their own dinner (every group has at least one guy that cooks well) if they want.

3. Admittedly, it’s not fresh, but no list of Myrtle Beach’s best seafood restaurants is complete without a buffet, and Original Benjamins, which claims to have introduced calabash style seafood to the area, is the best. The buffet features more than 170 items, including crab legs, so if it’s quantity you desire, this is your spot.

2. Sea Captain’s House is Myrtle Beach’s oldest and most popular seafood restaurant. The food is outstanding and the view overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is at least as good. The combination of food (the jambalaya comes highly recommended) and ambiance is hard to beat.

1. Forget being the best North Myrtle Beach has to offer, SeaBlue has set its sights much higher, saying, “We aspire to be among the best restaurants in the country, using locally sourced ingredients and displaying five-star service to all our guests.” According to 644 TripAdvisor reviews, Sea Blue has already conquered the local market and one look at the menu and you will see why the rest of America is next.
